Catholic Bishops call for justice after "foul" killings of two priests

The bishops termed the killings as veiled with malicious intent and mystery.
The Conference of Catholic Bishops of Kenya has broken its silence over the shocking heinous killing of its two priests, Father James Maina and Father Alois Bett, terming them as veiled with malicious intent and mystery.
In a statement to newsrooms, the bishops said they are greatly saddened by the sudden deaths of two Catholic priests in quick succession, which have led to a sense of insecurity and helplessness created by such incidents against the servants of God.

"We, as the Catholic Bishops of Kenya under the KCCB, send our sincere condolences to the Bishop and Diocese of Nyahururu on the death of Rev. Fr. John Maina, and to the Bishop and Diocese of Eldoret for the death of Rev. Fr Alois Bett," the statement said.
Fr Maina died while undergoing treatment, in what appears to be a case of possible kidnapping and poisoning.
The bishops said his death points to murder or foul play.
Fr. Alois Bett, on the other hand, died violently after being shot down by unidentified persons, as he was coming from ministering to the very poor.
"This is murder most foul, and cries to God against its perpetrators. How can it be that security can't be guaranteed for those serving in these remote areas? Who is really behind such a meticulously executed murder?" the bishops posed.
"We as Catholic Bishops are totally dismayed by how cheap life has become, where murders and deaths are taken lightly, and used carelessly for political expediency."
They said the work carried out by our Catholic priests goes beyond the service of religion and evangelisation.
"It reaches out to caring for the marginalised, the forgotten and the sick, to bring them hope that does not disappoint! We demand a deep inquiry into these deaths, to reveal the real circumstances and motives, so as to ensure the security and safety of our priests and all Kenyans going forward," the statement adds.
The church further said that while on its part it's praying for justice, it also called for mercy should prevail in the hearts of the perpetrators of the two killings.
"May God turn the hearts of those who have carried out these crimes to conversion. May God grant us the grace to forgive those who have taken the lives of our brothers. We look forward to a comprehensive report of these incidents in the shortest time," they said.
They also urged Kenyans to pray for the families of the priests so that they can find consolation and peace.
"We know how much pain they are going through. We join the faithful of our entire country in praying for the souls of these priests. Eternal rest grant to them, oh Lord," they said.
